Overview
Bringing accessibility to design, bite by bite
In today's hyperdesigned world, designers try to shape our surroundings with everyone in mind, right? Turns out that about 16% of the population unintentionally gets excluded. People with disabilities face inaccessibility almost constantly, leading to exclusion, dependence and a loss of freedom, impacting physical health, social inclusion, and mental well-being severely.
While designers aim to create inclusive spaces, many struggle due to a lack of awareness, time, or knowledge. Trying to understand what effect disabilities have on life, I simulated disabilities on myself and interviewed experts and people with disabilities. I soon realised it wasn’t only the disabilities restricting their freedom, inaccessable design was. Learning to design accessibly myself highlighted the challenges of incorporating accessibility into design, prompting me to create BiteSized.
BiteSized is an easy-to-use accessible learning hub where designers can access knowledge, training, and tools on accessibility in bite-sized chunks. Through collaborative efforts with accessibility experts and designers, we've curated short and interactive articles covering accessibility in various creative fields. The initiative not only educates but also spreads awareness through social media with simple design and tool tips, making accessible design approachable and effortless.
User testing has shown promising results: after just 15 minutes on BiteSized, 66% of users learned something new about accessibility, while 100% made their first accessible design choice. Join BiteSized.site and take your bite out of accessible design today!
