Overview

From paper to screen

As an assignment from my studies Communication and Multimedia Design, I was tasked with adapting a storyboard for a short story into the cinema format. As it was my first time using any professional gear at all, I pushed myself to learn a lot about lighting, storytelling, filming, editing, compositing, sound design and more. To get comfortable with scene lighting, I experimented a lot with placements, intensities and colour. Sound effects were no different. To determine what light setup, sound effects and props I would need during filming, I decided to make a try-out version. This helped me to determine the timings, as the short wasn't allowed to be any longer than thirty seconds. The try-out helped me learn what the right angles and settings for the lights and cameras were and allowed me to tinker with the cinematographic devices to improve storytelling. Using what I learned during the try-out, I prepared for shooting day. Roles were cast and shooting times were negotiated. Because everything would have to be recorded within one day, I made sure to communicate exactly what needed to happen using a detailed shot-list and a planning. The hard work of filming, editing and compositing resulted in an energetic, sharp, colourful and high-quality short clip with an engaging character and a setup that definitely pays off.
